Swiss Artist Robin Meier Selected As The First Artist Of The 2015 Audemars Piguet Art Creation Commission

Audemars Piguet is pleased to announce that Swiss artist and composer Robin Meier has been selected as the first artist of the Audemars Piguet Art Commission. Meier will work with Audemars Piguet and the prestigious plan guest curator Marc-Olivier Wahler to create a new themed artwork for the Art Basel, which will debut in Basel in June 2015. Meier’s creation is based on the theme of ‘synchronization’ and the natural cycle of nature. Through a single rhythm, seemingly unrelated concepts and objects are linked to present another level of meaning.
Meier’s sound works and installations focus on nature and artificial intelligence as a form of self-organization or collective intelligence. With the help of professional laboratories and scientists, he explores how order arises in a chaotic situation, and uses scientific research to express artistic ideas. Meier will create a large installation for the first Audemars Piguet art creation commissioning project, combining music, fireflies, bioluminescent bacteria, and puppets in the same rhythm, connecting disparate fields. These self-synchronizing creatures and systems are beating together under the power of a single rhythm, injecting a unique rhythm into the entire exhibition space. Meier’s interest in time patterns echoes the harmony and consistency exhibited by Audemars Piguet’s sophisticated mechanics.
Earlier, Meier was invited to Le Brassus, the birthplace of Audemars Piguet, to learn about the brand’s fine watchmaking tradition, professional craftsmanship and innovative technology for the past 140 years. The superb craftsmanship, forward-thinking, and superb technology shown in his breakthrough works are in line with Audemars Piguet’s watchmaking traditions and are the main reasons why he stands out in this plan. In the cultural works of the 45th Art Basel, Meier’s new large-scale sound effects installation is particularly eye-catching, which reflects the spirit of innovation created by Audemars Piguet.
In cooperation with internationally renowned curator Marc-Olivier Wahler, Audemars Piguet assists Meier’s projects in all aspects. The distinctive Audemars Piguet art creation commission plan not only provides production resources for brand-new creation, but also connects with professional knowledge in the process of creating a new commission plan. For this project, Audemars Piguet works with researchers and related organizations, such as the Swiss Papilioram Foundation to raise awareness of tropical forests and biodiversity. Meier will work with the Papilioram Foundation, artist André Gwerder, and a team of scientific research professionals from the fields of genetic engineering, computer science, firefly reproduction, cymbals, bioacoustics, and cognitive science to create this commissioned artwork.

Marc-Olivier Wahler, the guest curator of this project, is the founder and director of the Chalet Society in Paris. Wahler, who was born and raised in Switzerland, has a close cultural connection with the development of Swiss fine watchmaking, and brings the experience of organizing more than 400 exhibitions in the past 20 years to the Audemars Piguet art creation commission. The first work will debut at the Basel Art Fair in Basel in June 2015, and will be rotated every year in various hosted areas of the Basel Art Fair, including Hong Kong (2016) and Miami Beach (2017 ) And return to Basel in 2018.
Robin Meier, the first selected artist of this commissioned project, said: ‘The concept of synchronization pervades every corner of nature, from the quantum to the cosmic level. It is no exception. The Audemars Piguet creative commissioning project allows me to explore two thinking directions. Clear and measurable, the other is implicit and subjective, but both are invariably moving towards the ‘synchronous’ phenomenon. By collaborating with different scientific researchers and experts around the world, this plan has enabled my art research Make the most of it. This project also allows us to penetrate all disciplines through art and try to unravel the basic principles of voluntary organizations and the collective wisdom of nature. ‘
Curator Marc-Olivier Wahler said, ‘As the first guest curator of this series, I am very pleased to be working with Robin Meier in the first Audemars Piguet commission for art creation. Meier’s work fully reflects complexity and time With innovative and superb skills, his latest art commissioned work will further explore the limit between materials and technology. Audemars Piguet’s art commissioning program will assist Meier to take his work to a new level and gradually realize this wild creation. ‘- –
